The western regions of Ukraine are playing an increasingly important role in maintaining the country’s trade links with Europe. This was stated by expert Mykola Kovzel, who emphasized that it is through Lviv, Zakarpattia and other border regions that the majority of export and import cargo flows today.
“Western Ukraine has become the main support pillar for Ukraine’s logistics. Lviv, Zakarpattia and other western regions have taken on the bulk of foreign trade cargo flows. The economic importance of this direction is now higher than ever before,” says Mykola Kovzel.
According to Mykola Kovzel, a new logistics map of the country is forming, with growing importance of border crossings, warehouse and transshipment capacities, as well as cooperation with European partners.
“The western regions have effectively become the foundation of Ukraine’s trade relations with Europe. This is not just geographical proximity — it is a coherent logistics system that allows businesses to operate even during periods of high uncertainty,” the expert notes.
Mykola Kovzel adds that it is the western corridors that now serve as the main channel for exports, including agricultural, metallurgical, engineering and other products.
“This reorientation of routes has enabled Ukrainian businesses to maintain their presence on European markets and even strengthen their positions in certain segments,” he explains.
The expert emphasizes that the logistics of Western Ukraine has become an element of national resilience: “These regions serve as a kind of logistics shield through which the country maintains trade, gains access to critical imported goods and keeps production running. It is clear to me that the western direction will remain key for ensuring the stability of trade operations for a long time.”
According to Mykola Kovzel, strengthening the logistics infrastructure of Western Ukraine is an investment in the future of the economy: the active development of transport corridors and close cooperation with EU partners lay the foundation for further integration of Ukraine into the European market.
