Half of American businesses in Ukraine have already suffered severe blows from Russia, with damages amounting to millions of dollars, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal said at a press conference in Kyiv.

What Senator Blumenthal Said About Russia’s Attacks on American Businesses
Russia is deliberately and systematically attacking American businesses in Ukraine, half of which have suffered severe damage from Russian missiles or drones, U.S. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal said at a press conference in Kyiv on August 26.
“Americans ought to be outraged that Vladimir Putin is deliberately and intentionally targeting American businesses. Make no mistake: these are not missiles or drones that accidentally veered off course. These attacks are deliberate and repeated. They have caused millions of dollars in damage and constitute a gross violation of international law, not to mention basic moral standards. I hope that American businesses will speak out more forcefully to the President and Congress to demonstrate the strength of the United States in order to force Putin to the negotiating table and put an end to this war,” he emphasized.
Will Support for Ukraine Affect the U.S. Midterm Elections?
The senator was also asked how significant the issue of support for Ukraine might be during the upcoming U.S. midterm elections and whether Washington could resume financial aid to Kyiv in the event of a Democratic victory. Blumenthal predicted that the Democrats would win a majority in the House of Representatives.
“My personal prediction is that the Democrats will win a majority in the House of Representatives. And, to be honest, as a Democrat, I’m also pinning my hopes on the Senate,” the senator added.
Currently, Republicans hold majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Midterm congressional elections will be held in the U.S. in November, during which the entire House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate will be up for re-election.
Which U.S. Businesses in Ukraine Have Been Hit by Russian Attacks
A few days ago, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reported that Russian troops struck the American Mondelez factory in the Sumy region with two drones, injuring several workers. This is not the first time Russia has struck facilities belonging to American companies in Ukraine - in February of this year, according to the Foreign Ministry, Russia struck another Mondelez facility in Trostyanets, Sumy Region.
Furthermore, in August 2025, the Russian military struck a civilian facility in Mukachevo, Zakarpattia Region, with Kalibr missiles. The city’s mayor, Andriy Baloha, later clarified that the target of the attack was a plant belonging to the American electronics manufacturer Flex, which provided jobs for thousands of local residents. Flextronics (Flex) confirmed that its plant in Mukachevo had been hit.
Commenting on the strike against the facility in Zakarpattia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia “has never, under any circumstances, intentionally attacked any targets unrelated to Ukraine’s military capabilities.”
How Many U.S. Companies Continue to Operate in Ukraine
In May of this year, Andy Hunder, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, said that 90% of American companies continue to operate in Ukraine despite the full-scale war and targeted Russian missile attacks on civilian industrial facilities - amounting to nearly 600 enterprises.
According to him, nearly half of the business association’s member companies - ranging from manufacturing facilities to port terminals - have already been hit by Russian attacks. At the same time, defense companies are eyeing the Ukrainian market.
