No drug shortages are currently expected in Ukraine, despite systematic Russian strikes on the country’s manufacturing and warehouse logistics infrastructure. Uninterrupted supplies are ensured by intense competition among dozens of pharmaceutical companies in the domestic market and the wide availability of interchangeable drugs.

This was reported by Kateryna Zagoriy, a member of the Strategic Council of the pharmaceutical company Darnytsia, as cited by Dengi.ua.

How Pharmaceutical Companies Are Adapting Logistics and Production to Military Risks

According to Kateryna Zagoriy, the domestic pharmaceutical sector has significant resilience thanks to the deep diversification of its product lines (for example, pharmacy chains carry about forty brands of acetaminophen), which allows them to quickly replace scarce items with alternatives in the event of any logistical disruptions.

Key tools for overcoming infrastructure challenges in the industry:

  • Decentralization of supply chains: to ensure stable drug delivery, manufacturers have moved away from relying exclusively on large national carriers, distributing freight volumes among dozens of small local operators;
  • Facility security: due to their vast size, pharmaceutical plants are extremely difficult to fully secure. For security reasons, companies do not publicly disclose the extent of damage to their production assets;
  • Unpredictable timelines: It is impossible to calculate in advance the exact duration of delays in medication shipments due to ongoing damage to distribution hubs and the need for emergency rerouting of delivery routes.
