An International Monetary Fund mission led by Gavin Gray began meetings with Ukrainian authorities and other negotiating parties on August 31. The parties are discussing further cooperation under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program and key economic issues. This was reported by Forbes Ukraine, citing the IMF’s office in Ukraine, as reported by Dengi.ua.

What IMF Representatives Are Discussing

During the working visit, the focus will be on several areas. In particular, Fund representatives intend to assess:

  • the prospects for the development of the Ukrainian economy;
  • the government’s fulfillment of its commitments regarding macroeconomic reforms;
  • the implementation of structural reforms under the EFF program;
  • Ukraine’s draft state budget for 2027.

The outcome of the talks is important for Ukraine’s continued progress through the program’s scheduled reviews and for receiving subsequent international financing.

How Much Money Does Ukraine Receive Under the IMF Program

IMF support remains one of Ukraine’s main sources of external financing amid a full-scale war.

The current four-year EFF program provides $8.1 billion in funding. It replaced the previous $15.6 billion program, which the Fund approved in March 2023. Under the previous program , Ukraine received nine tranches totaling $10.6 billion.

Ukraine received the first tranche under the new program - approximately $1.5 billion - in early March 2026.

Three more program reviews are scheduled for this year - in June, September, and December. Successful completion of these reviews will allow Ukraine to secure more than $2.4 billion in additional financing.

At the same time, the total amount of international financial support expected to be mobilized under the new IMF program is estimated at $136.5 billion under the baseline scenario. If economic conditions deteriorate, this amount could rise to $146.3 billion.

Thus, the current negotiations with the IMF mission are crucial not only for assessing the state of the Ukrainian economy and reform implementation, but also for securing the continued external financing Ukraine needs amid the war.
