The National Children's Specialized Hospital "Okhmatdyt" continues to restore operations in its buildings and departments that suffered from the Russian Federation's terrorist attack. In April, thanks to ongoing active cooperation with the "Shliakh Serdets" charitable foundation, a crucial genetics department was opened. The foundation announced this on its website.

Context

On July 8, 2024, Russia carried out one of its largest missile strikes on the capital, which affected the "Okhmatdyt" hospital. At the time of the strike, over 600 young patients and their families were present.

The toxicology building, which provided critical dialysis procedures, was destroyed by a missile. Nearby buildings also suffered damage from debris and the blast wave. Among them was Building 15, which houses the Specialized Medical Genetic Center.

Socially responsible businesses and charitable foundations joined the efforts to restore operations – from equipment procurement to repair work. These included the "Shliakh Serdets" charitable foundation and its founder, Artem Lyashanov, whose focus is on projects assisting children's hospitals and educational institutions.

What Was Done?

The 4th floor of the building was completely renovated, which included:

  • Major restoration of all premises on the floor;
  • Restoration of utilities (plumbing, electricity);
  • Organization of a staff area.

The total amount of funds raised was 2.8 million UAH.

"This is currently the largest initiative of the 'Shliakh Serdets' team, which lasted almost 6 months. Our members and partners are proud to have been able to contribute to restoring a place whose importance simply cannot be expressed in simple words. We plan to develop cooperation with 'Okhmatdyt' hospital – and therefore urge conscientious Ukrainian businesses to join us," stated Yulia Ovcharenko, head of the foundation.

Why is this important?

The main tasks of the center are early and accurate diagnosis, provided to both children and pregnant women or couples. The laboratory at the center is the only state institution that can perform prenatal diagnosis of orphan metabolic diseases and monitor patient treatment from all regions. Restoring the center's full operation will significantly expand these capabilities.

"The renovation truly turned out to be top-notch: modern design, quality materials, and thoughtfulness in every detail. The interior creates an atmosphere of comfort and trust, which is very important for a medical facility and the patients who visit it. It's genuinely pleasant to be here for both patients and staff. A big thank you to the employees of the 'Shliakh Serdets' charitable foundation for your contribution to the reconstruction of our center!" – said Vira Halagan, head of the Medical Genetic Center at "Okhmatdyt" Hospital.
