In 2024, the IT sector contributed 3.4% to Ukraine’s GDP, with digital services exports accounting for 11.5% of total exports and 37.4% of service exports.
These are the results of a study on the development of the Ukrainian IT industry in 2024, conducted by the IT Ukraine Association.
Overall, digital service exports totaled $6.4 billion for the year, which is 4.2% less than in 2023. The decline in exports has been ongoing for three consecutive years since 2022. Experts attribute this trend to the outflow of specialists and the relocation of companies from Ukraine due to the war.
According to the study, the contribution of IT service exports to Ukraine’s GDP stood at 3.4%, exceeding that of the metallurgy sector (2.3%) and transport services (2.1%). The agricultural sector remained the leader, contributing 12.8% to GDP last year. In the overall structure of Ukrainian exports, the share of IT services was 11.5%, with agriculture making the largest contribution - 44%.
According to the research, Ukrainian IT companies exported the most digital services to the US - $2.397 billion or 37.2% of the total industry export volume.
“The Ukrainian IT industry continues to deepen cooperation with key markets: the US, UK, Germany, Israel, Switzerland, and Poland... These are technologically advanced markets seeking the best solutions for their businesses - and they’ve found them in Ukraine,” said Maria Shevchuk, Executive Director of the IT Ukraine Association.
According to the Association, in 2024 there were over 2,100 verified IT companies in Ukraine employing 258,200 people. In 2023, the industry had 265,000 specialists; in 2022 - 272,800.
Despite a three-year negative trend in key indicators, experts still consider Ukraine’s IT sector one of the most promising areas for post-war economic recovery. According to the 2024 E-Government Development Index, Ukraine ranked 5th globally in digital public services development.
