Steel production: Ukraine drops to 23rd place in world ranking

China remains the leader in both iron and steel production.

In January-March 2025, Ukrainian steelmakers melted 1.73 million tons of steel, which is 2.74% more than in the same period of 2024. However, Ukraine has moved from the 21st to the 23rd position among 71 steel-producing countries. This is reported by "Ukrmetallurgprom" with reference to Worldsteel data.

World steel production in the first quarter of 2025 is 468.61 million tons, which is 0.36% lower than in January-March 2024 (470.31 million tons).

The leader here is the People's Republic of China, which melted 259.33 million tons, up 0.60% from January-March 2024 (257.78 million tons). The PRC's share in global steel production is 55.3%.

At the same time, in the first quarter of 2025, Ukrainian metallurgists produced 1.70 million tons of pig iron, which is 7.16% more than in the same period of 2024. Ukraine remained on the 14th position among 40 pig iron producing countries.

In January-March 2025, metallurgical enterprises of the world produced 346.34 million tons of pig iron, which is 0.04% more than in the first quarter of 2024 (346.21 million tons).

The first place is also occupied by the People's Republic of China, whose metallurgists smelted 216.28 million tons of pig iron in January-March 2025, which is 0.80% higher than in January-March 2024 (214.56 million tons). The share of Chinese pig iron in global production is 62.5%.
