The U.S. State Department has authorized the potential sale of Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended Range (JDAM-ER) kits and related equipment to Ukraine for an estimated $373.6 million. These kits allow unguided bombs to hit targets with high precision at ranges exceeding 70 kilometers. This was reported by Dengi.ua with reference to information from European Pravda.

Volume of JDAM-ER Equipment

The Ukrainian government’s request includes the following components:

  • 1,200 tail kits for KMU-572 JDAM munitions.
  • 332 tail kits for KMU-556 JDAM munitions.

The comprehensive order also encompasses maintenance equipment, spare and repair parts, consumables, technical and logistics support, weapons software, and engineering services provided by both the U.S. government and the prime contractor, Boeing.

Technical Capabilities of the JDAM-ER

The Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) is a specialized guidance kit that converts "dumb" unguided bombs into all-weather "smart" munitions. The Extended Range (ER) variant features a wing kit that deploys after release, allowing the bomb to glide to targets over 70 kilometers away. Boeing, headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, will serve as the primary contractor for this project.

Impact on Ukraine's Defense Strategy

The U.S. State Department emphasized that this agreement is vital for Ukraine's ability to deter current and future aggression.

"The proposed sale will improve Ukraine's capability to meet current and future threats by providing additional means for self-defense and regional security missions through more robust precision strike capabilities," the department stated.
